VENLYS maritime specialisation services advanced assessment tool for seafarers will be utilized by the company’s shore personnel (e.g. Marine and/or Technical Superintendents) in order to improve the current assessment procedure of the crew (officer and ratings) performance on board ships. The implementation of this new assessment tool will be beneficial for a company as that there will be:

  • a structured, adapted, objective and transparent process for assessing the performance of the seafarers on board ships;

  • a common basis metrics applied to for all seafarers;

  • a continuous monitoring of the performance by the shore personnel.

Continuous monitoring of the seafarers’ performance on board ships will provide data that can be used as a Leading Indicator in order to better assess the Safety performance of the company. Therefore, this project can be a plug-in to the project of the identification of Safety metrics and development of Leading Indicators.

In particular the whole project is divided in the following phases:

  1. Evaluation of the existing tool (gap analysis)

  2. Set the goals/standards of the new assessment tool

  3. The new assessment tool

  4. Training of the shore personnel

  5. Pilot implementation

 

Evaluation of the existing tool (gap analysis)

The first step of this project is to thoroughly examine the current assessment tool that the customer implements in order to identify the deficiencies and/or gaps, as well as the reason for why personal experience/opinion of the assessors is affecting the objectiveness of the current assessment method

Set the goals/standards of the new assessment tool

The next step, will be a thorough analysis which will be conducted in cooperation with the company in order to propose and set more appropriate and objective metrics/standards for the new assessment tool, based on the previous step and the needs/goals of the company. These metrics will combine the Technical skills of the seafarers along with the Non-Technical Skills so as to effectively measure the performance of the seafarers on board ships. 

The assessment tool

Various competences will be checked and combined based for the compilation of the advanced assessment tool according the road map of the previous phases. The main goal of the tool is to be easily implemented by the assessors as it is structured in such a way that the personal opinion/experience of the assessors to be minimized, in order to be more efficient and objective.

Training of the shore personnel

Following the compilation of the tool, a tailor-made training course, based on the IMO Model Course 1.30, is delivered to the personnel that is involved in the assessment to properly trained them to become familiar and competent to implement the new tool. The customization of the course will be not only to the company’s needs, according to the second step, but also to the background/culture of the trainees (e.g. technical or marine, ex-seafarer or not).

Pilot implementation

The final step of the project is a pilot implementation in which VENLYS maritime specialisation services will guide trainees to their first implementation of the tool. This pilot implementation will:

  • will help trainees to implement, hence better understand, for what they will be trained,

  • offer the ability to identify any deficiencies in the methodology so as to proceed with the appropriate corrective action (e.g. adapt training needs).

Various pilot implementations can be done through time by VENLYS in order to monitor and evaluate the progress of the assessment tool and if required further adapt it to the needs of the company.
